Feature: "Make Me A Naturalista"

Natasha of Mane Moves TV and Yardley of The Coil Review created a web series called “Make Me A Naturalista.” Sounds fun, eh?!  The purpose behind the webisodes is to help women overcome their natural hair styling and challenges by getting them an amazing makeover! How cool is that?! Yardly reached out to me asking if I can spread the word by posting the videos on the blog. Once I checked them out, I fell in love! Such a great idea and awesome way to bring natural chicas together, so of course I agreed.  Above you can find the first video that gives insight on the story behind the web series. Below you will find the premier episode, check it out and let me know what you think! Don’t forget to subscribe to their channel HERE

I will be on Thanksgiving break from school so it’s perfect timing! Today (November 13, 2025)  I twisted my hair in mini twists and plan to keep them in for two weeks (hoping they last that long). I will be sending out a check in email on the 1st day of the challenge and last day of the month until February 19th so be on the look out!

Natural Hair: Marley Twist Maintenance x Beija Flor and QRedew Review

Hey Chicas! Happy day of thanks to you and yours, I hope you all have fun today.  Above is a new video on how I maintain my Marley twists. I figured that some of you may want to know how I keep my hair moisturized while the twists are installed.

Also, a lot of women have been asking if they can join in on the challenge and OF COURSE you can. I will post  the letter that I sent out to everyone after this post. I am thinking that sending out the email blasts will get a little chaotic so I will be updating on the blog instead and sending out BCC'd emails with recipes and such to the everyone. The "reply all" option started to become a little much for some people.  I am so excited to have more women aboard, WELCOME!

Enjoy the video y'all!

Captured Curls: Andrea

This stunning Bantu knotted beauty has been on my radar for months now! Some of you may recognize her as one of the models from Beads By Aree and others may be unfamiliar. Either way this gorgeous girl definitely deserved a spot as this week's Captured Curls, I hope you enjoy her story.

xoxo,
Alex

Please introduce yourself?
-My name is Andrea Collins and I am 22 years young.  I was born and raised in the DMV (DC, Maryland, and Virginia) but my heart resides in DC.  I am the wife to the most amazing man on Earth and the ultimate big sister to my 5 younger siblings.  I enjoy food, people with creative abilities, altering and creating clothing, excitement, and laughter.  All in all, I am a pleasant and artistic stylista who believes in positivity and originality........ with natural hair :)
What is your current hair regimen?
-To cleanse my hair, I use Motions shampoo and conditioner.  For moisture, I deep condition my hair monthly, every other day I grease my scalp with any kind of light grease, and I use olive oil or Carol's Daughter Hair Milk daily on my hair.  Lastly, every 6 to 8 weeks I go to a beauty salon to get my hair trimmed. Maintaining moisture and trimming the ends of my hair is very important in keeping my hair healthy.  To protect my hair at night, I sleep with a silk bonnet or a silk scarf if my hair is in a protective hair style.

When you travel how do you care for your hair?
-I care for my hair the same as I would if I would home.  I carry everything needed to maintain my hair; moisturizer and scarf unless the trip is long term then I bring my shampoo and conditioner as well.
How would you describe your hair type?
-Full with tight, kinky spiral curls.
What type of products work best for your curls?
-All products by Carol's Daughter that are used for people with natural curls and any kind of light greases and oils.

Loc'd Man: Jason

Tell us a little about yourself? (ex. name, age, state, school) My name is Jason “BrotherSpanky” Edwards, I’m 26 and I live in Washington, DC. I’m a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania in Philly.

How long have you been growing your locs? I’ve been growing my locs for almost nine years now.

What do you use on your hair, product wise, to maintain it? I’ve been through a litany of products throughout the life of my locs, depending on who was my loctician, how long I spent between visits, where I was living, and a host of other factors. I started out a fan of the mango & lime product line, but most recently, I’ve been using a simple almond and shea butter shampoo, tea tree castile soap (which leaves no residue), and a mix of oils including tea tree and jojoba for moisturizing and maintaining it.

How often do you have to wash and re-twist your locs and who styles them? It depends on the weather and how much I sweat, but I thoroughly wash my locs about every two weeks. I’m at a point where I no longer get my hair palm-rolled and now prefer to have them interlocked every six weeks or so (a process that includes a crochet-style hook) since they keep longer (cycling and bikram yoga undid the palm-roll process far too quickly!) I’ve gone to the same shop since shortly after I started my locs (Twist It Sista @ 317 T St NE) but rarely get them styled anymore. They’re pretty heavy now, and I think as long as they’re clean and healthy, I’m fine. I don’t need to see my scalp all the time.

What do you think about women with natural hair? Do you care if your woman is relaxed, natural or loc’d? I’ve dated sisters both with and without natural hair, and I think many women make an assumption that men with locs somehow require a loc’d counterpart! I don’t make my decisions based on that factor.

Do you think women who choose to loc their hair are sexy? Incredibly so. I do actually have a secret weakness for women with natural hair, and a head of healthy locs is a beautiful thing. While I don’t throw any shade to my “relaxed” sisters, there is something to be said about a woman being comfortable and proud enough to prefer her hair in its natural state, Madame CJ Walker be damned.

In Review: Scalp Soother

From the company:

Is the Scalp Soother really better than sex? Some ladies who have endured the notorious "weave itch" seem to think so. Finally, there is a solution to relieving scalp irritation associated with wearing hair extensions, weaves, and wigs - and it's getting a lot of attention. Sherri Shepard of The View, actress Regina King, comedienne Kim Coles, actress Kym Whitley, and on-air personality Tammi Mac are just a few of the women who have publicly declared their love for Luxe Therapy's revolutionary Scalp Soother.

  • Patent-pending hair comb is ergonomically designed to conform to the shape of the head
  • Effortlessly soothe and massage the scalp without affecting your braided base, net, or extensions
  • Reduce irritation and stimulate hair growth by promoting blood flow to the scalp
  • Safe alternative to using pointy objects to alleviate "weave itch" (this can injure the scalp and cause hair follicle damage!)
  • Can be used on natural hair, including Type 4 (kinky) without disturbing hair styles
  • Flexible, yet sturdy base that is guaranteed not to break
Luxe Therapy is a natural vegan and organic hair care line with a collection of shampoos, conditioners, hair vitamins, and the exclusive Follicle Food scalp treatment to revolutionize how you treat your hair, from scalp to tip.

Giveaway: Sunburst Extreme Hydration Cream

It's giveaway time again AND this product is right on time for the cold months ahead. Ashley of Mahogany Queen sent me her fluffy rich Shea butter mixture last week, I love it; it smells good enough to eat too, which makes me an even bigger fan. The "Sunburst" butter is great for sealing ends and using after a nice hot bath or shower on your skin. If you want to enter and learn a little more about the mixtress, click the jump! Good luck... :)
