After my terrible weave experience I decided to keep my style low maintenance and scalp accessible. I went back to my braider and had her cornrow one side of my hair over with a little bit of hair added, the type used for kinky twist, so that that could last longer. The other side was left loose so that I could style it as I pleased. For a few days it was twisted and I really loved the look.

BeautyShorts: Caleb
I have started a new campaign called Beauty in Color which is geared toward young women of color in the Washington, DC metro area. My first event is coming up in the Spring and I am super excited about it! Angie Ange of 93.9 WKYS is helping me get my new movement off the ground and will also be sharing her hand in the event. I want Beauty in Color to depict a woman’s beauty in a different light. Inner beauty is important and I hope my campaign will shed that light to youth of color everywhere!
Since I am heavily involved in the natural hair community it’s only right to have my very first event centered around young women, their hair and the beauty in loving what God gave us as black women. Please feel free to share these shorts on your blogs, Tumblrs, Twitters, ect. :)
Leading up to the event I will have short videos posted on YT and Vimeo called “BeautyShorts” that will capture positive opinions of beauty in women. I hope you all enjoy and if anyone wants to be interviewed on camera in the DMV area please email me! I would love for you to share your beauty with me. Also, we will need guest blog/vlog speakers and vendors so PLEASE contact me if interested.
xoxo,
Alex

Weave from Hell
(this pic is the only good thing that came out of wearing that dreadful weave...)
As you can see from the title, something went wrong. REALLY wrong. My latest weave install is out nine weeks earlier than expected. Why, you ask? Well, because number one, I should have stuck with the same hair and supplier from my last install. Number two, I had a terrible allergic reaction to the hair that was supposed to be virgin and it was not! My scalp became terribly inflamed, red and itchy. I have never experienced that much discomfort in my whole life, I was in pain almost.

In Review: Thank God It's Natural Shea Butter Sampler
A couple of weeks ago myself and a few other bloggers were invited by author, Chris-Tia, of "Thank God I'm Natural" to try her new product line which is respectfully branded "Thank God It's Natural." I jumped at the opportunity to sample the line because not only am I a fan of the book but all natural products always tickle my fancy.

Protective Styling: Curly Weave Maintenance Video
While wearing my curly weave install I plan on making a few videos to show you how I maintain the hair in a way that works for me. In today's video you will see how I prep my weave in the morning, along with the products I use. I must say, I am missing my bush ALREADY but I am very excited to see my growth and length retention 10 weeks.
xoxo,
Alex

Captured Curls: Jess AKA Mahogany Curls
I have been a fan of Ms. MahoganyCurls for sometime now. So, when she asked to be featured of course I said yes! I follow Jess on InstaGram and Twitter, her spirit is very lovely and calm. I'm sure you all who watch her on YT can pick up that amazing vibe. Below you can read about Jess's journey and you'll also find her links. If you are not following her via YT and other social networks you should be; she truly is a breath of fresh air. ENJOY!
xoxo,
Alex
Please, introduce yourself!
Hello Everyone! My name is Jessica and I am 25 years old, some of you may know me as MahoganyCurls from YouTube.
How did you fall into making YT videos and becoming a “guru?”
I decided to go natural in late 2008 and did the big chop in 2009. Hair care has always been a passion of mine. Learning how to care for natural hair just came to me naturally :). I decided to make YouTube videos to document my natural hair journey. I wanted to share my trials and errors with the natural hair community.

Protective Styling: Kinky Curly Install *take 2*
Yay! I am weaved up again and I am so excited about it. Sometimes a much needed hair break is called for. I plan to have my install in for about 3 months like I did last time. Protective styling has come to be my best friend and I so happy that I broke down and started listening to my hair last year. I have good feelings about my hair journey and I am looking forward to September, which will mark 3 years curly for me. I am hoping to be close to BSL (bra strap length) by then. A few of you had questions about my install so I tried my best to answer them in a YT video. If you click the jump you will find the video below. Should you have anymore questions, feel free to leave a comment!
xoxo,
Alex

I love OYIN!
Oyin Handmade has been dear to my heart since I big chopped in 2007. I have used Oyin's product line faithfully for the past two years on my hair and body. The scents and richness of the products give me a feeling of warmth and perfection-- yes, they are that good. Whenever someone asks me what I use in my hair, Oyin is the first thing I say and I'm quick to point whoever asked in their direction. I even give Oyin as gifts to friends and family who are new to the natural hair game. So, I guess it's safe to say that Oyin products are my staple. The whole line, I love and would recommend any and everyone to try them.

Today's Hair: Twist Out Fro Hawk
Today was a great hair day. I wore my hair out for the first time in weeks and it's amazing to see how big my hair is getting! I always say that "my hair grows upward to the heavens, for the greater good" and I absolutely love that. I decided to wear a twist out style but I was aiming for something a little funky. What's more funky than a fro-hawk? Well, I'm sure there are some "funkier" things but in my case, since I rarely style my hair, I decided to take a risk. To my surprise, I was pleased with outcome! I attribute my satisfaction to the combination of Oyin's Hair Dew x Curl Junkie's Smoothing Lotion. The definition achieved was amazeballs and I went most of the day with frizz free curlies!
